About Shelter Island

Early in the seventeenth century, the beautiful Island known as Manhansack-aha-quash-awamock (“an island sheltered by islands”) was the peaceful home of the Manhanset tribe of Indians.

Once bought for 1,600lbs of sugar, to being ransacked in the War of 1812, to now, Shelter Island is a favorite getaway location to classic American style.

Enjoy the beautiful waterways, go for a swim at Cresent Beach, play a round of golf at the Country Club, go for a bike ride, hike the trails, or visit the shops while you’re here at the “island sheltered by islands”.

  • Everything you need is there.

I live in NYC and it was finally time to visit Shelter Island, which I had never been to. Bill, a friendly native of Shelter Island, knows everything about the area. He promptly managed to accommodate me for a few weeknights, despite being booked solid. A pleasant surprise, the Inn is in what appears to be the best location in Shelter Heights. Everything you need is there. I will definitely return to House on Chase Creek. Thank you Bill for your kind hospitality!

  • The inn is beautifully maintained and our room was extremely clean.

The House on Chase Creek is a hidden gem on the island. The inn is beautifully maintained and our room was extremely clean. Our host, Bill, was very attentive and gave us great suggestions of things to do on our first visit to Shelter Island. He even set up the fireplace in our room for us every night so all we had to do was light a match and enjoy. I can’t say enough good things about Bill and his wonderful B&B. We were planning a return trip before we even left!
